For the fifth year, Loughborough Amherst School has welcomed teams from six local primary school to compete in its hotly anticipated Debating Day event.

Teams of nine and ten years olds from Cossington, St Mary’s, St Paul’s, Holywell, Rothley and Plumtree showcased their brilliant minds taking part in four rounds of prepared debates to determine which teams would reach the final.

This year’s motions included, ‘This house believes that video games teach bad habits’, ‘This house believes that birthday presents are bad for the environment’ and ‘This house belies that teachers should wear school uniforms’. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to put their critical thinking to the test, as well as honing their public speaking skills.

Sixth Form students from Amherst also played a vital role on the day by assisting with scoring, timekeeping and modelling the debate for the competing teams.

The standard of debate was nothing short of exceptional.  From thought-provoking arguments to eloquent rebuttals, these young debaters captivated the audience with their intellect and charisma.

Culminating in an epic and close-fought final battle between Holywell and St. Paul’s schools, the young talent took to the stage with aplomb, demonstrating confidence, eloquence, and critical thinking. For the third consecutive year, Holywell School claimed victory, showcasing their unwavering dedication and exceptional debating skills.

The standard of the teams rises every year and I am very proud watching pupils of such a young age growing in confidence, delivery and articulation over the course of the event.  My congratulations go to all involved.”
