Welcome to Loughborough Amherst School
Dr. Julian Murphy
Thank you for taking a first step in considering Loughborough Amherst School for the education of your child. I hope that our website will give you some sense of the spirit of our caring, vibrant and inspiring community.
With the welcoming of boys into our Senior School in September 2019, we became Loughborough’s only co-educational independent school for children aged 4-18 years, thereby offering a unique and much-needed educational route to local families.
We are dedicated to creating an environment where every pupil has the opportunity for long term academic, spiritual and moral development within a challenging but happy environment.
We encourage and challenge every pupil to become the very best version of themselves and aim to help parents in their task of nurturing confident, compassionate and happy young people.
I am confident that, having met our staff and pupils and seen all that we have to offer as part of the Loughborough Schools Foundation, you will – like me – feel that this is a school that combines the finest of the traditional and the modern to provide a caring and rounded education of the very highest quality.
Ambitious for your child
Our small class sizes, amazing ratio of teachers to pupils, individual care and flexible curriculum allow us to cater for a range of abilities, in a way that more selective schools or a larger school can’t always match.
Every year between 75% and 80% of our Year 13 leavers gain places at the first choice of university. About 70% of our leavers each year go on to attend Russell Group universities. In 2019 we had our first Oxbridge applicant in a few years, who successfully gained an offer of a place at Oxford to study Music.no
A Catholic School welcoming all faiths and none
We are proud of being a Catholic School and since the School’s founding in 1850 the philosophy of Blessed Antonio Rosmini has remained at the heart of our ethos that ‘a pupil must be allowed to grow and develop as an integrated human person.’
But we do no seek to impose any doctrinal belief on any member of our community. The School is home to Anglicans, Methodists, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists as well as pupils whose home life is entirely secular. What we practise is the belief that education is about the whole person and that spiritual and moral reflection are central to a pupil’s growth, flourishing and happiness.no
An ethos of care and community
Thanks to the on-site Loughborough Nursery and our own Sixth Form, your child can develop here from infancy to adulthood. Together with our small class sizes this creates a distinctively warm and welcoming school community where, as one pupil so aptly put it, 'nobody is a nobody'.
When pupils leave us, we want them to be confident and successful. But equally importantly, we want them to be caring and empathetic young people. The kind of young person you will be proud of.yes Pupils describe the school as an extension of their family life
A new educational approach
It is a given that we want to achieve the best for every child in our care. In a rapidly changing world, with increasing automation of certain jobs, a less predictable workplace, global connectivity, a globalised job market and lower social mobility, we need to adapt our educational philosophy to help every pupil possess the technical and emotional skills to prosper in this challenging environment.
Our answer to that challenge is Minerva – a new educational approach to improving school life for pupils and parents.no
The foundation of opportunity
We offer a broad and engaging range of enrichment opportunities to encourage the wider development of children, from top level Sport to Music, Drama, Art, community engagement, CCF and any number of tours, trips and clubs.
Our membership of The Loughborough Schools Foundation enables us to combine all that’s best in a small familial community with the first class resources of an extensive campus of over two thousand students.yes Pupils of all abilities and needs develop much self-confidence during their time in school
So much more than another department, Loughborough Schools Music is the joyous soundtrack that infuses life at all the Schools within the Foundation.
Housed in a purpose-built space, it is a vibrant musical hub with a constant creative buzz. From Pre-Prep to Sixth Form, every pupil has the opportunity, encouragement and very finest tuition to explore their musical passions, achieve their very best and perform at the highest level.
By any measure, facilities are outstanding. We are proud to be the only Schools in the Midlands to have a Music department with ‘All-Steinway School’ status and we have a huge variety of instrumental ensembles and choirs so every pupil gets to ‘strut their stuff’ on one stage or another. Do come to see and hear us. It really is something quite special.no
