Welcome to Loughborough Amherst School
Mr James Neville MA (Oxon), MPhil (Cantab)
Welcome to Amherst.
Ours is a caring, vibrant and inspiring community, where pupils' enthusiasms and creativity shine through in every aspect of school life. We warmly encourage you to visit us in person and experience for yourself what makes our school community so special.
We are dedicated to creating an environment where every pupil has the opportunity for long-term academic, spiritual and moral development within a fulfilling and happy environment.
We encourage and challenge every pupil to become the very best version of themselves and aim to help parents in their task of nurturing confident, compassionate and happy young people.
We are a Catholic school in the truest sense, universal and welcoming of all, regardless of faith background. We seek to nurture in every pupil a concern for the world around them, compassion for others and a deep sense of wonder.
Originally founded in 1850 as a girls' school, in 2019 we became Loughborough’s only co-educational independent school for children aged 4-18 years. As part of the Loughborough Schools Foundation since 2015, our pupils benefit from sector-leading music, performance and sports facilities.
I am confident that, having met our staff and pupils and seen all that we have to offer, you will agree that our school combines the best of tradition and contemporary thinking to provide a rounded education of the very highest quality.
Ambitious for your child
Our small class sizes, excellent pupil-to-teacher ratio, individual care and flexible curriculum ensures that every child is known individually and can be supported to achieve their greatest potential.
Our Year 13 leavers gain places at a wide range of destinations, including Russell Group and international universities, and degree apprenticeships. We provide bespoke support for competitive course such as Medicine, and several students have gained places at Oxbridge in recent years.no
A Catholic School welcoming all faiths and none
Spiritual life is central to our school identity and informs the high standards we strive to achieve day to day. We are proud of our Catholic heritage, pedagogy and tradition, informed by Blessed Antonio Rosmini's belief that ‘a pupil must be allowed to grow and develop as an integrated human person.’

An ethos of care and community
Amherst’s through-school, co-educational offer, from Nursery to Sixth Form, allows all pupils to progress here from infancy to young adulthood. Together with our small size, this creates a distinct, family atmosphere that makes Amherst uniquely warm and welcoming.yes Pupils describe the school as an extension of their family life
A new educational approach
It is a given that we want to achieve the best for every child in our care. In a rapidly changing world, with increasing automation of certain jobs, a less predictable workplace, global connectivity, a globalised job market and lower social mobility, we need to adapt our educational philosophy to help every pupil possess the technical and emotional skills to prosper in this challenging environment.
Our answer to that challenge is Minerva – a new educational approach to improving school life for pupils and parents.no
The foundation of opportunity
We offer a broad and engaging range of enrichment opportunities to encourage the wider development of children, from top level Sport to Music, Drama, Art, community engagement, CCF and any number of tours, trips and clubs.
Our membership of The Loughborough Schools Foundation enables us to combine all that’s best in a small familial community with the first-class resources of an extensive campus of over two thousand students.yes Pupils of all abilities and needs develop much self-confidence during their time in school
Loughborough Schools Music is the joyous soundtrack that infuses life at all the Schools within the Foundation.
Housed in a purpose-built space, it is a vibrant musical hub with a constant creative buzz. From Pre-Prep to Sixth Form, every pupil has the opportunity, encouragement and very finest tuition to explore their musical passions, achieve their very best and perform at the highest level.
By any measure, facilities are outstanding. We are proud to be the only Schools in the Midlands to have a Music department with ‘All-Steinway School’ status and we have a huge variety of instrumental ensembles and choirs so every pupil gets to ‘strut their stuff’ on one stage or another. Do come to see and hear us. It really is something quite special.no
