Careers in Law
The Foundation were delighted to welcome back LGS alumnus Tom Owen, a barrister at Keating Chambers in London. Tom gave a brief overview of roles and route into the legal profession and shared his own journey through Downing College, Cambridge and Nottingham Law School.
However, the highlight of the events was the opportunity to look at some case studies involving criminal, tort and constitutional law. Excitement in the room rose as an enthusiastic audience forensically examined and explored points of law. Much discussion ensued as Tom encouraged all to contribute their views, opinions and ideas. At the end, the appreciative audience were left feeling inspired and excited by the intellectual challenge we had just experienced. This was a stimulating and exhilarating introduction to law for some; an endorsement and validation of a career plan for others.
Careers in the Allied Health Care Professions
Given the challenges within the NHS over the last couple of years, we were hugely appreciative that NHS staff were able to deliver in-person at our health careers event this week. The audience were introduced to a range of careers, including speech and language therapy, radiology and orthoptics, to consider alongside traditional medical and science careers.
Our speakers talked through training routes, the multidisciplinary nature of their work, and the various setting they operate in, from hospitals to community clinics, schools and homes. There was also a strong emphasis on the progression and development opportunities available in careers that typically offers a better work/life balance than many others related professions. The key take-aways were that these areas are dynamic and rapidly developing but also shortage occupations. Our speakers encouraged the audience to explore healthcare professions more widely, and take advantage of the current opportunity for networking and work experience.
