Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are at the heart of the curriculum and the campus at Loughborough Schools Foundation and we actively support and promote a huge range of STEM opportunities– both in and out of lessons.
Inspired by creative teaching and exciting super-curricular activities, we have ever improving results in the STEM fields at GCSE and A Level. We are also proud that many students are nominated for and have won awards for STEM projects. These include a team of Year 11 students winning the UK Young Engineers of the Year 2017 Award at the national Big Bang Competition; annually winning a category in the TeenTech competition and achieving Gold in Science and Maths Olympiads! Being local to 3M, many teams compete in the 3M STEM challenges reaching the finals whilst also gaining Discovery CREST Awards.
STEM opportunities are not confined to lessons and an extensive co-curricular programme allows students to achieve Bronze, Silver & Gold CREST awards; Youth STEMM Awards; become STEM leaders (as part of a national qualification) and take part in exciting competitions such as BAFTA Game Competition.
Our students’ curiosity of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is supported through trips to STEM facilities at local universities and activity days and as a result of their enthusiasm, we have a STEM Sunday initiative where students come in once a month to develop their ideas further. Guest speakers who are keen to share their STEM experiences, also come in on a STEM Sunday to engage with students and their projects.
STEM is embedded within all aspects of school life here at the Foundation, giving our students a brighter start to their careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. As a result, we have seen a significant number of student’s progress to study these areas at a much higher level at University and employment.
"Pupils are deeply engaged in the learning process, and a very large majority of pupils and parents commented on the help and encouragement they receive from supportive, dedicated and experienced staff when they encounter problems with their work"
