The Grammar School was well represented on Saturday 26 June, Armed Forces Day, at the unveiling of a blue plaque on the birthplace of one of its most famous alumni, Johnnie Johnson – the top scoring RAF Pilot of World War Two.

Situated in Warner Street, Barrow-upon-Soar, Johnnie was born here on Tuesday 9 March 1915 and John Weitzel, LGS Archivist, spoke about Johnnie’s childhood in both Barrow and Loughborough before Johnnie’s son, Christopher, unveiled the plaque.

Christopher ended his speech with these words “Johnnie would have appreciated seeing the RAF Cadets here as he always believed today’s youth would serve, if called upon, with the same distinction as he and his comrades did.”

Following the unveiling there was a flypast by a spitfire and a hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
