Congratulations to Oliver in Year 7, who came second in the British Laser Run competition in Edinburgh.

Oliver has been invited to represent GB at a laser run international competition in Madeira in June and has been selected to compete for the European Championships in Athens in August. This is an excellent achievement!

The Modern Pentathlon scheme set up this year at the Grammar School has gone from strength to strength and is bringing great experiences and diverse opportunities.

"Hello, I am Oliver and I am going to tell you about my trip to Edinburgh. At School I have been participating in the Modern Pentathlon programme which has taken me to Edinburgh in Scotland to compete in the Under 13 boys British Laser Run Championships. A coaching tip was “1 speed below fast until the last run”, I came second with a time of 3 minutes and 48 seconds. My result means that I have qualified to race at an international event. I really enjoyed my time in Scotland racing in the British Laser Run championship. I travelled there the night before and stayed in a lovely hotel nearby. When I travel to competitions the journey can be long or short, but it is always worth it because you can make friends with the people you race, and you get to see different parts of the country. When I competed in the British Laser Run Championships, I got to go to the Oriam Centre, which is the Scottish Sports Performance Centre and Europe’s largest astrodome with a synthetic indoor pitch. The astroturf felt soft but springy to run on. The best part of it all is the taking part. The officials are always fun and welcoming, and the atmosphere of the event is fantastic. When you have finished racing you feel like you can conquer the world. If you enjoy Sport, then this can be a fantastic opportunity to try a new fun sport. For Laser Run, you need to shoot a laser pistol at a target to get five green lights and run 300m. You repeat this three times and run into the finishing funnel. This year I have competed in a Biathlon, which is where you swim and run as fast as you can, and Tetrathlon which is a swim, fence, run and shoot, I raced these sports at Bath University. I hope you can come to training at School, there is a Discover Laser Run competition on 7 May at a school in Melton Mowbray. P.S. Shoot for green and run for fun. Thank you to all the staff at school for making everything possible."
