The girls arrived in good time for a thorough warm up ready for an afternoon of competitive hockey. The tournament was a round robin format which saw Fairfield pitched against Foremarke 1 in their first match. Feeling this could be the toughest of the afternoon, the girls started the game in a determined fashion, defending tightly and pushing the ball forward to attack the Foremarke goal. The game was incredibly even with chances falling to both teams. However, it was Foremarke that capitalised and converted which secured them a 2-0 victory. Heads and hearts did not drop and immediately they went in to their next game against Pennine Way. This was far more one sided and Fairfield worked well to maintain lots of possession in the opposition’s half. At full time it was a convincing 4-0 to Fairfield and smiles returned to faces of both the girls, the parents and Mrs Sutcliffe. Again, we were straight back on for our third game against a vey well drilled Belper side. More evenly matched, the girls had to raise their game to create changes and were soon rewarded with a well taken goal. Belper fought back to score an equaliser but we showed true grit to steal a well taken second and a deserved 2-1 win. With a well earned one game break for the girls, chocolate taken on board to raise energy levels and great parental support, the girls entered their final match against Foremarke 2 excited at the prospect of a medal opportunity. This was a super final match with all the girls playing really well, supporting each other when legs got weary and tracking back to help defence. The final result was a resounding 5-0 win to secure the Runners up position and thoroughly deserved silver medals. Well played to every member of the squad, a great team effort where they learnt a lot in preparation for the forthcoming IAPS Regional Finals. Many thanks also go to all the wonderful parents for their fantastic support on the sidelines, it was greatly appreciated.
