Staff judging two science-based competitions at Fairfield said they have been ‘seriously impressed’ by the high standard of entries they received.

Year 5 and 6 pupils were invited to enter the Eco Tech Challenge, which involved them designing and constructing an eco-accessory or a decorative garden sculpture made entirely from recycled materials. Amongst the entries were dresses made from plastic shopping bags, crisp packets and drinks pouches, a skirt and bag made from newspapers, a water collection table made with wood and tarpaulin, a ‘bird bar wonderland’, and a flower sculpture made from recycled drink bottles.

Alternatively, pupils could choose to enter the Canyon Crossing Challenge, which saw them tasked with designing and constructing a bridge to span a gap of 70cm. Bridges could only be made of certain materials and had to be as light as possible in their construction, but strong enough to carry 10Kg in weight during testing. All of the bridges entered held the required weight, and the materials used included paper, lollipop sticks, string, Lego, cardboard and plastic bottles, in a wide variety of colourful shapes and sizes.

Head of Science, Mrs Saperia, said: “The thought that all the children had put in to their entries and the attention to detail in their design and construction was a credit to them.”
