Fairfield sports teacher, Lisa Sutcliffe, has been recognised for encouraging and enabling participation in physical activity in the local community by being shortlisted for the Active Community Award in this year’s Leicester Mercury School Awards.

For the past few years, Mrs Sutcliffe has been the organiser of Loughborough Town Sports, an athletics competition for children at primary schools across the town which takes place each year at Loughborough University.

Staging the event requires a significant amount of organisation and administration, and when its future was in doubt several years ago, she stepped in to ensure it remains an annual festival of sport for local children.

Mrs Sutcliffe hosts planning meetings, organises the programme, and liaises with all the schools and stakeholders to ensure the event is a success. She also recruits a team of volunteers whose help on the day is invaluable. All of her work on Town Sports is carried out in addition to her extensive teaching and extra-curricular commitments at Fairfield.

John Byrne, County Sports Partnerships Director at Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, supported her nomination: “Without doubt Lisa Sutcliffe demonstrates enormous support for school sport and physical activity,” he says. “She volunteers her time graciously and her work to support Town Sports should be highly commended. Along with the team of other volunteers she recruits, Lisa has given thousands of young people in our community an opportunity to take part in a high quality athletics programme and more importantly – enables them to create memories that will last a lifetime. Without people like Lisa, opportunities for our young people would be limited. She is richly deserving of the recognition of being nominated in this category. Her commitment and enthusiasm to supporting young people in having positive experiences is without doubt infectious.”

Although she didn’t come away with the award at the ceremony, which she attended on Wednesday 25th June at The City Rooms in Leicester, everyone at Fairfield is delighted that Mrs Sutcliffe’s hard work and dedication has been recognised outside our school community.

We also send our congratulations to the award recipient, Keith Yates from Fullhurst Community College in Leicester.
