Fairfield hosted their 3rd round match against Leeds Grammar on Tuesday. Fairfield batted first achieving a commendable 16 ½ rounders. Leeds Grammar followed on and Fairfield were quick to get six of the Leeds out through excellent bowler, backstop and first post fielding. The deep fielders also played their part covering ground quickly to block the ball and making some fantastic catches. Unfortunately for Fairfield from the three remaining Leeds players one of their team was a County tennis player whose striking skills were phenomenal. She was able to place the ball in any gaps which the fielders were unable to cover. In the first innings she scored an amazing 9 rounders bringing the half time score Fairfield 16 rounders, Leeds Grammar 16 ½ rounders. In the second innings Fairfield were feeling the pressure and unfortunately Leeds Grammar managed to stump a couple of players on the posts early on. The score at the end of the Innings was 25 ½ rounders to Fairfield. The Fairfield team knew they had to prevent Leeds Grammar scoring 9 ½ rounders as it would then be all over! Hurricane gales swept across the pitch as the team went out to field. Even with the bowlers excellent efforts the ball was being blown sideways making bowling nigh on impossible! The fielder’s did an amazing job but with only three of the Leeds team remaining Leeds scored their target of 9 ½ rounders and will go on to the fourth round of the I.A.P.S competition. Although disappointed not to go further in the competion the team can take consolation from knowing how much they have improved over the year. All of the players were a credit to Fairfield.
