On Wednesday 20th September, Fairfield hosted their annual U11 tournament. With five other teams involved from Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire, the standard of hockey and competitive spirit was high. The tournament consisted of two pools with Fairfield in a pool with Leicester Grammar and Ratcliffe College. The girls got off to a steady start but soon settled into playing some super hockey, creating numerous scoring chances whilst also maintaining a tight defence. Their hard work was finally rewarded with a well taken goal to secure a 1-0 win. With little time to recover, the girls went straight into their second game against Ratcliffe. Again they found their rhythm and played really well as a team; distributing the ball effectively and working hard off the ball to provide options to receive the pass. The final result was 2-0 to Fairfield which put them into a final against a Spratton Hall. This game was well fought by both sides and saw opportunities at both ends. Despite some super shots on goal, full time saw a 0-0 draw and the prospect of penalty shuffles to decide the victors. With some superb goal keeping Fairfield won the shuffles 1-0 to be crowned winners. They should feel justifiably proud of their achievements; a super start to the exciting season ahead. To cap proceedings for all the players, former pupil and current England U21 player, Esme Burge, kindly took time out of a very busy training schedule to come and support the teams and present all the trophies and prizes. Thank you to all the parents who came along to give such wonderful support to the girls and to Mrs Webster and Mrs Love for all their help in the organisation and umpiring of the tournament.
