We are pleased to announce that Fairfield has received the Eco-Schools Bronze Award.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

Schools follow a process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, and work towards gaining one of three internationally recognised awards – Bronze, Silver and the Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.

Pupils are the driving force behind Eco-Schools. Supported by Mrs Saperia and Miss Carter, children in our Upper Prep formed an Eco-Committee and carried out an audit to assess the environmental performance of the school, looking at nine criteria, including water and energy use, biodiversity, litter, and waste and recycling. The results of the audit helped them develop an action plan, then pupils voted for the environmental targets they want to set and decided how they would try and achieve them.

They aim to work towards the Silver Award during the 2015/16 academic year.

Some superb entries were received for the Eco Challenge Competition in the spring term. Children were tasked with building an eco habitat for small animals, with four creations being entered for the Eco Schools category in the locally-staged 3M Young Innovators Challenge.

Our Eco Committee members are currently making fairy homes using pots donated by a local garden centre. These will be taken to the Fairfield Forest School to inspire our Reception children through literacy.

Thank you to all the children involved in the Eco Committee for helping our school achieve the Bronze Award, and to Mrs Saperia and Miss Carter for all their help.
