Opening Doors Through A Burton Bursary

What difference can a bursary make? For one family, a Burton Bursary has been truly life‑changing.
Due to financial circumstances, some children may never get a chance to experience the best opportunities education has to offer. At Loughborough Schools Foundation, bursaries funded by alumni and friends open those doors. They ensure an outstanding LSF education is available to talented pupils, regardless of background. We are so grateful to everyone who supports this cause.
One special award that we offer to families is a Burton Bursary. The Burton Bursary scheme supports tuition fees of up to 100% for selected pupils, and the impact of a Burton Bursary should never be underestimated.
We spoke to a Burton Bursary awardee, who joined Loughborough High School (LHS) in September 2024, and her parents. One full academic year on, we asked for their reflections on the difference that a Burton Bursary and life at LHS has made. Here are their responses:
How have you, or your daughter, found this academic year at LHS?
LHS Pupil: “I thought the school would be quite stressful, because it’s a big change and quite a bit larger than my primary school, but I didn’t get as lost as I thought I would on campus. I have made some nice friends throughout the year.”
What has you, or your daughter, enjoyed the most at school this year?
LHS Pupil: “I have enjoyed the practical side of learning alongside the theoretical side, such as food lessons, drama and science experiments.”
What extra-curricular activities have you, or your daughter, taken part in? Which has been her favourite, and why?
Parents: “Our daughter has taken part in knitting, crocheting, tennis, board games, House drama, singing lessons and the Lower School drama production.”
LHS Pupil: “I found crocheting the most fun, as it’s been something I can stick with and also practice at home if I want to, and it’s a great way to relax at lunch. The group and I also chat and tell jokes, and it’s really nice.”
What are you, or your daughter, most looking forward to next year?
LHS Pupil: “I am excited to start Shooting Club. I’m also excited to learn more things, specifically in Spanish, as I am really enjoying learning another language.”
Have you seen any personal growth in your daughter over the past year? If so, what positive changes have you noticed?
Parents: “Our daughter’s confidence has grown and she is starting to be more organised. She walks to school most days and enjoys the freedom and opportunity to meet with friends to walk to school together. It’s also noticeable that she responds more positively under pressure.”
What has the Burton Bursary meant to your family?
Parents:
“Our daughter feels privileged to have the opportunity to attend LHS and stepped up to the responsibilities of the academic requirements. It has allowed us to send her to a school where she can excel.”
What are you most proud of your daughter achieving this academic year?
Parents: “We are proud of how our daughter has embraced new subject areas as well as sustaining an interest in existing academic subjects and activities. She has settled in well and is enjoying student life and the ease that the teaching staff make her feel.”
What has it meant to you to have former pupils and friends support your daughter so far?
Parents: “We are extremely grateful that, thanks to people’s generosity, students like our daughter have been able to have opportunities that we may not have been able to support her with.”
If you could say thank you to those who have donated to support the Burton Bursaries, what would you say?
Parents: “Thank you for your generosity and continued support of students attending The Foundation. Having the opportunity to apply for support allows families who may have discarded the thought of applying for their child to instead consider all options with their children’s best interests at heart.”
