Restoring the Past

Much work has taken place during the holidays in restoring the past.
The biggest project has been the ongoing repointing and replacement of worn stone work on ‘School House’, built 1850, which until 1964 was the Headmaster’s House. What is now the Headmaster’s House, No 2 Burton Walks, was built in 1881, and it has had repairs to its roof prior to the arrival of James Neville, the 9th Headmaster to live in it. Red House was built a year later, and after 143 years, there was a need to replace the windows. The Barrow Building celebrated its centenary this year and it too has had new windows, carefully created to match exactly the windows they replaced. Finally the Quad Wall, originally built in 1850, has been repointed 30 years after it was rebuilt prior to taking the replacement railings in 1995.
