On Tuesday 25 June, LGS hosted their annual Junior Prize Giving to celebrate the academic achievements of pupils in Year 6 – Year 9. We were delighted to be joined by Tom Fanthorpe (LGS 1999) as the Guest Speaker. Tom has spent his career in Formula One and is currently the Lead Engineer in Computational Fluid Dynamics for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Tom is no stranger to the School and regularly supports career events and activities. He credits LGS for giving him his platform to success.

As part of his visit this time round, Tom placed a pin on the map in the Head’s Office, a new tradition for alumni returning to campus where they can highlight a city close to their heart. Tom’s chosen location was Florida!

Tom then spent some time getting to know our new Director of Development, Stuart Swan, before having a tour of the school and moving to the Head’s house for a Drinks Reception where he also met the School Governors.

After some introductions and networking, it was time to move to Burton Hall, where Junior Prize Giving winners displayed their work for guests. Tom made his way around the room, speaking to pupils in depth about their displays and asking them questions. He handed out prizes to the winners and congratulated the boys on their excellent projects.

Guests then filed into Hodson Hall and heard from the LGS Head, Helen Foster, who introduced Tom as the Guest Speaker. As part of Tom’s speech, he talked about his positive experiences of school, his own Junior Prize Giving and how LGS gave him the skills and confidence he needed to succeed and lead in his chosen career. He encouraged the boys to make the most of the opportunities presented to them at LGS, and continue working hard towards whatever they wanted to achieve.

"I was honoured to be invited to attend the Junior Prize Giving at Loughborough Grammar School, as guest speaker. It's 25 years since I left and some things never change. It's still such a grand establishment to be part of and the welcoming, family atmosphere is still as strong as ever. As always the boys were overflowing with enthusiasm and I was blown away by the amazing quality of their work that they were kind enough to talk me through. Thanks for a wonderful evening and allowing me to speak about my school memories and how they've managed to shape the engineer and leader that I continue to strive to become."
