Ed Barney (LGS 2001) has been appointed as Performance Director for Men’s Cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

When at School Ed was an excellent all-round sportsman. He played centre at rugby; was a top swimmer, where his events were back stroke and individual medley, and played 1st XI cricket for four seasons, being its leading wicket taker with his off spin in 2000 and a prominent batsman as well. However, we were always very aware that he fitted all this in around his sailing outside School where we was part of the junior GB squad being prepared for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

After A levels he progressed to Exeter University to read Exercise and Sports Science and also excelled with his sailing in the Tornado class with multiple national titles and a top 10 world ranking. He combined this with being a Performance Sailing Coach for the Royal Yachting Association, coaching the GB juniors to back-to-back World Championship titles.

He added an MSc in Sports and Exercise from Loughborough University in 2010. Following this, he completed a PhD at Bangor University alongside working at the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Performance Centre as Talent Identification and Development Scientist working under Simon Timson (LGS 1982-89).

He joined England and Great Britain Hockey in 2013 as Head of Talent Development before becoming its Performance Director in 2016. In his 7 years with them he oversaw Olympic, European and Commonwealth Games success for both the men’s and women’s teams. He returns to the ECB in March to start his new role.
