Over the past couple of months, the OLA Golf Society has been busy with fixtures, including their Autumn meeting in September, the annual fixture against LGS and the Grafton Morrish finals.

Autumn meeting on 13 September

The Autumn meeting was held at the beautiful Charnwood Forest Golf Club, which is home to a 9 hole course, and one of the few courses without any bunkers.

The weather made for perfect golfing conditions and was enjoyable for all who came. The scores on the day were excellent with several being over 30. It is also wonderful to see alum, Pippa Arkle (nee Stephens, LHS 1999) become the first female winner of an OLA golf society meeting. The top positions and scores on the day were:

3rd – with 35 points was Ben Keast (LGS 1996)
2nd – with 38 points was Roger Bayes (LGS 1980)
1st – with 40 points was Pippa Arkle (LHS 1999)

Annual golf match against LGS boys

The annual golf match between the Old Loughburians’ Golf Society and the School took place on Tuesday 26 September at Longcliffe Golf Course. Despite wet weather looming in the morning, the afternoon cleared up for this great tradition.

It has been six years since The School came out as overall winners in the match and for a brief time it looked as if they would break this streak when the first pair won, giving them a clubhouse lead. However, it was a short-lived lead as the next two pairs resulted in wins for the OLA.

It was up to the final pair to determine the result of the match. With the last putt of the match Roger Bayes (FFD 1973; LGS 1980), who was captaining the side, secured the victory by 3 matches to 1.

Roger received the trophy from John Weitzel at the end of the afternoon.

Grafton Morrish finals on 6-8 October

The talented OLA Team of Dave Saul (LGS 2007) and Phil Saul (LGS 2005), Scott Hamilton (LGS 2014) and George Griffiths (LGS 2011) and Avarj Ghaly (LGS 2007) and Joe Halfpenny (LGS 2016) were in Norfolk for their round match for the Grafton Morrish finals. It was a weekend full of excellently played golf.

Despite their loss in the first round of the main competition to Felstead, the team did brilliantly to fight back and win the Committee Bowl Trophy for the second time in 3 years.
