The Loughburians Cricket team, which is made up of LGS alumni spanning a wide range of class years, including some of our newest alumni from the Class of 2023, have been busy this cricket season getting involved in their annual fixtures.

Loughburians vs Loughborough Grammar School

In June, we saw the annual match between the Loughburians and Loughborough Grammar School First XI. This was an exciting game with James O’Kelly (FFD 2011; LGS 2018) scoring a century and one of our alumni spectators, Paul Kelly (LGS 1991), joining the Loughburians team as a sub in the second half – he just happened to have all the equipment he needed in his car! In the end, it was the Loughburians who were victorious, winning by 80 runs.

Loughborough Grammar School archivist, John Weitzel also put on an incredible archive display for our guests to enjoy.

Loughburians vs Elvaston CC

The annual fixture in memory of Sam Yaxley (LGS 2004) took place at the start of July. When heavy rain and thunder and lightning intervened the Loughburians were 12-3 in reply to Elvaston CC 234 all out. Below is a picture taken of the two teams together before the game.

Loughburians vs Leicestershire Gents

August then played host to the annual fixture against the Leicestershire Gents. Chasing down the Leics Gents 255, the Loughburians entered the final over with Savan Desai (LGS 2012) on 68 and four runs needed for victory. He was clean bowled off the first ball, and it was left to Alex Blackhall (LGS 2010) and Tom Ingle (LGS 2023) to scramble three runs off the next four balls to bring the scores level. Somehow, off the final ball, despite missing it, they managed the run needed to give the Loughburians victory by two wickets.
