At the end of the last half term, Loughborough High School enjoyed a joyful assembly to celebrate Diwali, which was officially celebrated on 24 October.

During the assembly performers wore beautiful traditional clothing whilst performing dances, songs and telling the story of Diwali. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a religious festival observed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains which celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.  The story of Diwali celebrates the victory and return of Rama to his kingdom in Ayodha with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after their defeating the demon Ravana and serving 14 years of exile.

"The Diwali assembly is one of my favourite assemblies to watch as a student. The atmosphere is always amazing and each year’s performers never disappoint. This year was no exception, with a series of dances, hymns and songs to celebrate the festival. The assembly also told the story of Rama and Sita, delivered by students of various ages from across the school. Mrs Ghaly made a special appearance, returning from retirement to watch the performers. Before leaving last summer, she had a key role in organising the Diwali assembly, so her coming to watch meant a lot to everyone on stage. "

"My favourite part of the assembly had to be the final dance. The assembly seemed to have come to an end, before a student rushed out, stopped everyone from leaving and started the music. The dance that followed was filled with all different styles of dance from the year 13 students, and you could tell that everyone on that stage was having the time of their life. To see a year group all together having fun was definitely something for the younger students to look up to, and as a year 12 student it made me look forward to next year's assembly with my peers and being able to get involved as they did.
