Friday 26 April 2019

The 2019 annual Old Pupils Golf Day was held at Luffenham Heath Golf Club on Friday 26 April, with teams representing Loughborough, Oundle, Stamford, Ratcliffe and Oakham Schools. Sadly, no team from nearby Uppingham this year. Thankfully the weather forecast was wrong again and the match was played in mostly sunny but windy conditions, and the rain held off until later in the evening. The course was well presented as usual with slick greens and dry fairways, giving plenty of run on the ball for this time of year, like most other courses after so little rain recently.

The competition format was pairs better-ball Stableford off 90% handicap over 18 holes. Each school enters a team of 6 players split into 3 pairs, each pair plays with a pair from another school, although not directly in competition with that pair. The scores of the best 2 pairs from each school are then combined to give the team score. Loughborough team pairs were Paul Graveling with Steve Maud, who scored 40 points, Pippa Stephens with Jonathan Carlisle who scored 36 points and Simon Cockbill with Rich Alexander who scored 34 points.

The overall winners were Oakham School with 81 points, and in second place Loughborough, Oundle, Stamford and Ratcliffe all scoring 76 points! The match was followed by a splendid meal of roast pork and eton mess, during which the trophy was presented to the Oakham School Team Captain who thanked the Luffenheath Heath Golf Club on behalf of all those present for organising and hosting the event.
