OL Golfers v The School – 29 March 2017
The weather was good for the time of year and The School team were out for revenge, following their defeat in 2016. The first match featured a father and son tussle with Hatj & Nick Chappell (old school house comrades) versus Max Chappell and James Scott, with Max and James coming out on top 2 & 1.
In the second match, Ollie Jarvis and Charlie Wood inflicted a 3 & 1 defeat on Steve Foister and former international cyclist, Chris Wreghitt after a tight battle over the Rothley back 9 in particular.
Steve Hilton and Robert Hallam, the ‘senior’ team for the Old Loughburians then came up against the big hitting (but not always on the golf course) duo of Toby Jansen and Charlie Sankey, with Toby and Charlie just edging the match, 1 up.
It was then a case of master v master as The Old Loughburians exercised their right to select a master to make up their team numbers with Rob Lightfoot & Nick Preedy (Old Loughburian Grafton Morrish team captain) defeating Laurence Mantell & Ben Spillane 2 up.
The final match was the closest of the lot with Eliot Gibson and Jack Horsall 2 up with 3 to play. Dave Barnett of the Old Loughburians holed a 20ft putt on the 16th to halve the hole in par to keep the match alive. Paul Graveling and Dave then won the final two holes to gain a fortunate half, but this was all in vain as the School won the match 3 and a half to 1 and a half.
Mr Duncan Byrne, the LGS Headmaster, arrived later in the afternoon to see the School secure the victory and he then presented the trophy to Charlie Sankey the captain of The School team, after a satisfying meal in the clubhouse at Rothley Park Golf Club.
The Captain of the Old Loughburians’ Golf Society (OLGS), Robert Hallam also made a short speech congratulating the School on their hard fought victory and hoping that the OLGS will attract lots of new players in 2017. Please get in touch with Dave Barnett email@example.com or 07985 476205 no matter your ability, it would be great to see more OLs at our 2017 events.
