The Skipper for world-record breaking team DarkTrio who rowed across the Atlantic earlier this year, shared his tips on mental resilience with Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Cadets from across the Loughborough Schools Foundation.
Gareth and his two team members, lived on a 28ft boat for 35 days whilst rowing 2,748 miles between them to raise money for Young Minds UK, a charity supporting mental health in teenagers and young adults.
Gareth joined Cadets from Loughborough Amherst, Loughborough Grammar and Loughborough High schools to share his experience of extreme challenge and determination. Whilst the watery undertaking would put even the bravest of adventurers to the test, Gareth stressed the importance of mental resilience to pupils in overcoming barriers.
The team came to understand the importance of putting structures in place for being open with each other, sharing thoughts and talking through their struggles.
