The Wind, Brass, Percussion and Bands Faculty consists of 14 specialist Individual Music Teachers (IMTs) and offers tuition on Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Drum Kit and Tabla and Harmonium.
The LSM Wind, Brass, Percussion and Bands faculty is proud of its focused approach to learning and development, enhancing the calibre and achievements of all our students.
Pupils have a wide range of instruments to choose from, ranging from all orchestral woodwind, saxophones, brass, percussion, drum kit, as well as tabla and Indian Classical Music. Our pupils have the opportunity to take exams in their instruments and number pass Grade 8 with distinction, progressing onto to take performance diplomas.
We offer an extensive selection of 24 ensembles; be it an instrument based ensemble, wind band, orchestra, chamber ensemble, or jazz band, there is an opportunity for all students to take up a place in one of our music groups. Additionally, students are encouraged to branch out from school music where possible and recently musicians have been a part of the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, the English Schools’ Orchestra and National Youth Concert Band.
We regularly have visiting guests working within the faculty, either an instrumental masterclass or a professional performance. Recently we have had sessions with Gerard McChrystal (saxophone), Adrian Bending (timpani and percussion), Abbie Burrows (flute) and Murray Greig (brass). Visiting adjudicators to our faculty solo competitions have included Morgan Griffiths (brass), Sqn Ldr Richard Murray RAF (woodwind) and Aidy Spillett (percussion).
The Wind, Brass, Percussion and Bands Faculty performances include regular success in the ‘Music for Youth’ National Festivals, joint collaborations with the Band of the RAF College, Cranwell and the RAF ‘Swing Wing’. We have featured as guests at local charity events and regularly take part in foreign tours. We also perform throughout the year on campus either as part of the LSM ‘Spotlight’ series or in lunchtime concerts.
With a team of 14 IMTs, the faculty is always busy, striving to give the best musical experiences and achieve the highest standards possible.
