Loughborough School pupils recently embarked on an exciting journey to design and test an innovative 3D conservation game called Restoring Pugin, in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Nottingham Cathedral, and Culture Syndicates.

Augustus Pugin was the architectural mastermind behind iconic buildings such as the Houses of Parliament, as well as Nottingham Cathedral. With the use of cutting-edge digital technology, the project aims to inspire the creative bright minds of the future as well as highlighting the importance of cultural preservation.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the game’s purpose is to raise awareness of heritage and preservation among young people, and pupils from both Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School played a pivotal role in its development.

Led by a team of professors and researchers from NTU, 42 enthusiastic pupils from Years 7 to Year 12 took part in creative workshops to begin the game’s development process.  The school children then brainstormed and created the first storyboards, characters, and other game details; their creativity and insights proving invaluable in shaping the game’s narrative and design elements.

A highlight of the workshops was the opportunity for pupils to experience a virtual tour of Nottingham Cathedral using VR headsets and a 3D model created by NTU. This immersive experience allowed them to explore the intricate details of the cathedral, providing a deeper understanding of the significance of heritage conservation.

After finalising the game’s details, NTU developed the first BETA version for testing, providing the young designers with the opportunity to provide feedback. Their critiques were praised as ‘mature and outstanding,’ reflecting their commitment and attention to detail. Their suggestions contributed to helping refine the game, ensuring it met the highest standards of educational value and engagement.

The pupils’ final involvement in the project was a trip to NTU’s VR studio where they tested the improved version of the game using the Kat VR Katwalk gaming platform, and also explored 3D printing technology. The visit was an enriching experience, showcasing the application of computer science in architecture and conservation.

The project left a lasting impact on the Loughborough pupils, broadening their perspectives on the interplay between technology and heritage conservation.

Alexa, Year 9 at LHS, shared: “I have learnt how VR can be used to help teach others about the importance of conservation of old historical buildings. I also learnt how so many areas go into the making of a 3D game. Computer science is important in so many areas, it is the future.”

Seth, Year 8 at LGS, highlighted his newfound knowledge, saying: “I have learnt a lot about conservation and architecture, and the different ways buildings get damaged and how to repair them.”

Hailey, Year 10 at LHS appreciated the interdisciplinary nature of the project, stating: “I have learnt about how to protect historical buildings and how computer science is used in 3D printing and architecture.”

Professor Benachir, Professor of Digital Architectural Design at NTU, as well as the project leader, shared his admiration for the pupils’ contributions: “My colleagues and I were thoroughly impressed with the LHS and LGS students. Their innovative ideas have truly brought this conservation project to life, showcasing their deep understanding of heritage preservation and conservation.

The maturity and dedication displayed throughout the project were commendable. A special shout-out to your younger students, especially a remarkable Year 8 student, whose exceptional dedication and creativity exceeded all expectations. Well done to all!”

Houda Benhamouda, Head of Computing and Digital Literacy at The Loughborough Schools Foundation said: “The collaboration between Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School, and NTU in the Restoring Pugin project was a remarkable journey which not only fostered creativity and critical thinking among our talented pupils but also highlighted the importance of preserving our heritage through innovative technology.

The experiences and contributions of the young designers underscore the significance of involving young minds in heritage conservation, ensuring that the legacy of historical landmarks continues to inspire future generations.”
