From boarding student to UCL mathematician

Felix’s Loughborough Grammar School journey

When Felix Peng arrived at Loughborough Grammar School as an international boarding student from China, he described himself as quiet, reserved and understandably nervous about starting life in a new country. Just two years later, he left school with outstanding A Level results and a place to study Pure Mathematics at University College London (UCL), one of the world’s leading universities.

Today, having recently begun his studies at UCL, Felix reflects on the experiences that helped shape his success and prepare him for university life.

A smooth transition to university

For Felix, one of the biggest advantages of boarding at Loughborough Grammar School was how well it prepared him for the realities of university life: “Boarding prepared me so much. I already had experience of living independently with other students and staff. I knew how to cook, do my laundry and manage my own time. When I arrived at university, I felt much more prepared than many of my flatmates.”

Those practical life skills, combined with the independence developed throughout Sixth Form, have made the transition to university significantly easier.

Academic excellence through personalised support

Felix credits much of his academic success to the outstanding support he received from staff across the Loughborough Schools Foundation. Throughout the university application process, he benefited from expert guidance with his UCAS application and personal statement.

The support was incredible. I learned that universities wanted to see my genuine passion for mathematics rather than simply a list of achievements. That advice completely changed how I approached my application.

Alongside application support, Felix highlights the dedication of his subject teachers: “If I had a question, I could always ask my teachers. Whether it was in lessons, by email or through Teams, they always responded and helped me. The Maths and Economics departments supported me throughout my A Levels.”

His achievements extended beyond the classroom. Felix participated in the Senior Maths Challenge and the British Mathematical Olympiad, earning Gold Awards and achieving one of the highest scores within the Foundation

Learning beyond the classroom

While mathematics was undoubtedly a passion, Felix embraced opportunities beyond his academic studies. He attended the University Maths Club, which brought together students from both Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School, allowing him to collaborate with like-minded pupils across the Foundation. He also explored debating, which helped develop confidence and public-speaking skills. Away from academics, Felix enjoyed participating in badminton and tennis, making full use of the Foundation’s extensive sporting opportunities.

Growing in confidence

Looking back, Felix believes one of the biggest changes during his time at school was his personal development. He said: “When I first arrived, I was much more introverted. I mostly went to lessons and then back to the Boarding House because I didn’t know many people. Over time, I became much more confident and started opening up to others.”

He credits both the boarding environment and the wider school community for helping him build lasting friendships. Significantly, many of these friendships were formed with day pupils, highlighting the strong integration between our boarding and day communities.

A caring boarding community

While Felix’s journey was filled with success, it was not without challenges. He speaks openly about difficult moments, including dealing with the disappointment of a university rejection. During these times, he feels the School’s pastoral support made a profound difference: “The support system at Loughborough Grammar School helped me so much. Whenever I felt anxious, worried or disappointed, there was always someone there to help me. The boarding staff genuinely cared and supported me through everything. The care and support I received from the boarding team is something I will remember for life.”

Developing skills for life

Although Felix is understandably proud of his exceptional A Level results and securing a place at UCL, he believes his greatest achievements are the lasting qualities he developed along the way.

He particularly values the emphasis placed on independent learning: “At university, you need to be able to learn things for yourself. Loughborough Grammar School helped me develop that independence, and that’s given me a real advantage.”

Advice for future pupils

When asked what advice he would give to current pupils, Felix’s message is simple: “Listen to your teachers, take notes, work independently and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Also, make the most of the clubs, societies and opportunities available to you. You’ll meet amazing people and learn so much.” As Felix begins the next chapter of his journey at UCL, his story demonstrates the transformative impact of a Loughborough Grammar School education: exceptional academic preparation, meaningful friendships, a supportive boarding community and the confidence to succeed on a global stage.
