On Monday 3 April 2000, Our Lady’s Convent School celebrated its 150th birthday, with a number of activities taking place.
The Junior Department had a Victorian Day, which involved the pupils and teachers dressing in costume and experiencing, as far as possible, a typical Victorian school day: the dune’s cap; stern discipline; slates and chalk.
The whole school came together for a party in the hall with pizza and singing, followed by a slice of an enormous cake in the shape of 150, which was made and decorated by Mrs Charlesworth.
There was also an Easter Bonnet Parade, with hats made in House colours.
Mr Watkins drew a huge eye on the lawn, the ORBIS logo, which was covered in 10 pence pieces.
The following day, when the weather had improved, pupils took part in a balloon race. Balloons travelled from Covent Garden, to Great Yarmouth, the sand dunes of North Devon and one of the balloons travelled as far as Holland!
