Alum Wins Prestigious NHS Award

Congratulations to James Castleman (LGS 2003), Consultant in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at the Women’s Hospital, on winning the Moment of Magic award in the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust’s Spirit Awards.

James was nominated for his outstanding patient-centred care during a high-risk MCDA twin pregnancy. His dedication ensured the family always felt supported and valued, reflecting his daily commitment to delivering high-quality patient-focused care. Going the extra mile, he consulted a specialist for the latest statistics and even secured a neonatal intensive care bed for the baby on his day off.

Reflecting on the recognition, James said: “It’s an incredible honour to be recognised as the Moment of Magic winner. We make the care of our patients our utmost priority, so to be able to help someone in need at any time is a great privilege. I would like to pay tribute to my fellow nominees, and to thank everyone who voted for me. I could not do my job without fantastic colleagues, in particular my clinical colleagues, midwifery staff and our administrative support so thank you to all of them for making this possible.”

James always enjoyed subjects involving science and communication during his time at LGS, which helped him realise from a relatively young age that he wanted to be a doctor.

When asked what led him to specialise in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, he explained: “During medical school I enjoyed working in hospitals, in medicine and surgery, and in both emergency and planned care situations. Obstetrics and Gynaecology offers all of these things. During my general training I developed a flare for obstetrics and so decided to specialise in Maternal and Fetal Medicine in order care for a diverse range of complex pregnancies complicated by diseases affecting the pregnant person, the baby or both, including ultrasound guided procedures and surgical interventions. I am also responsible for prenatal screening and genomics in the region.”

James also reflected warmly on his school days, saying that he made his closest friends at LGS: “The best memories are those with my friends, some of whom are my closest friends to this day. I remember lots of happy times in the classroom, in the choir and concert band and on the rugby pitch. Some fantastic teachers laid solid foundations for my medical studies and career, and also for life as a gentleman in society which I really appreciate.”
