The School was founded in 1495 in a small room above the South Porch. It later moved into the main body of Church and subsequently into the Chancel, where it remained for almost the next 100 years, before relocating to purpose-built buildings adjacent to the Church until 1852. For over 300 years, from 1647, the boarders worshipped in the Church every Sunday until services were transferred to the School’s Chapel in the early 1960’s and for 100 years they were joined there by the High School boarders.
In 1793 a monument to Thomas Burton was placed on the South Side of the Church, where, by tradition, prayers had been said daily for his soul. In 1918 George Briggs (LGS 1891-93) became Rector and in 1921 he created the Burton Service for the two schools. Two years later he wrote the School Hymn and then set about creating a ‘proper’ Burton Chapel which was completed in 1932.
You can read about its history here.

The Church has raised nearly £350,000 to install a new lead roof over the Burton Chapel to stop water ingress, followed by renewal of the plasterwork and redecoration of the interior. This work is due to be completed in the summer.

The final project is the conservation cleaning of the monuments and carved wood panelling at an extra cost of £9,400. If alumni are interested in hearing more about this project please email treasurer@allsaintsloughborough.org.uk
