Keeping Ed Thorpe’s Sporting Legacy Alive

The Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund was created to honour Ed’s love of sport and his belief that every pupil should be able to train and compete on equal terms.

Thanks to gifts made in Ed’s memory from family, alumni and friends, LGS pupils in cricket and rugby are receiving support that protects their confidence and keeps their progress on track.

In the last academic year, one mother applied so her son could attend a specialist cricket camp. She explained that without the grant, he would not be able to go, despite his commitment to training and his pride in representing LGS.

“My son had an amazing time at the cricket training. He feels more confident to go into training and the season with his classmates. Thanks to the Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund, he feels more confident and ready. I was so happy to pick him up every day as he was always excited to tell me what he had been up to. It was a great experience. Thank you. It really did make a big difference.”

Another family applied so their son could buy the cricket kit required to represent the School.

“We were very pleased to have been awarded a grant. This is amazing news and means there is no more stress in having to explain to my son that he cannot play cricket because we cannot afford the uniform.”

Every application to the Fund is assessed against simple criteria. Pupils must attend LGS, play cricket or rugby, show commitment in and out of school, and need support for training, kit or travel. Behind each application sits a pupil who wants to represent the School with pride.
