Spotlight on Composing

The Summer Term started with heavy beats, floating piano lines, and jump scares. Our Spotlight on Composing celebrated the successes of our composers, who shared music they had written this year. It was an evening of world premieres, and the audience heard an eclectic mix of styles.

The concert started with Jack’s (Y13) Music Technology composition called ‘Stop and Go’, before we listened to a variety of Y11 compositions written for their GCSE. Angus’s Bach inspired ‘Invention’ was performed on the piano by Jeremy, and Miss Temple performed Maisie’s ‘Shadows of the Past’, a piece written about remembering. We heard Katie’s pop ballad, and were transported to sunnier climes by William. Jacob wowed the audience with his 1980s synth-based video game music and we also heard George’s anthemic ‘Land of Dragons’. Our Year 9 musicians wrote music to accompany a scene from a horror film earlier this year, and we were on the edge of our seats with Shaan’s response.

We are delighted that many of our pupils write music ‘just because’ (not for any academic requirements), and David’s (Y12) ‘Beating’, another excellent Music Technology composition got the Recital Hall rocking. Niyor (Y9) performed his piano duet with Leela and then Easher (Y9) shared ‘Marche Triomphale’ written for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, which will be performed live by the band in August. The concert ended with Dylan’s (Y13) Music Technology composition, called ‘Go and Stop’.
