Board of Governors

Our Board of Governors are, and always have been, a vital component in the continued success, progress and development of the Loughborough Schools Foundation, its three Schools and Nursery.

Their governance and wise counsel is of value not only to our current pupils and their parents but also to generations to come; a steering hand on the tiller to uphold standards of education and integrity, to strive for excellence, be enterprising and for every pupil to be a credit to themselves and the wider world.

Comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and qualifications, the Board meets regularly, supported by various committees focusing on Foundation operations, compliance and finance.

Each School has a Board, drawn from the Governors, providing oversight and direction on issues specific to that School.

The Governors are appointed by the Board, following an interview by the Nominations & Governance Committee. If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please contact the Secretary to the Board.

After Durham University, Simon started his teaching career at Worksop College, before moving to Loughborough Grammar School in 1981. He taught physics, was resident housemaster in School House, and latterly was Head of Sixth Form. His wife Jane taught at Fairfield, and their three children went through the schools.

In 2005, he was appointed Headmaster of Christ’s College, Christchurch, New Zealand. Challenges presented included recovery from the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, but Simon attaches as much satisfaction to cultural and attitudinal changes in the early years of this most traditional of schools.

Twelve years later, thoughts of retirement were put aside with a move to the recently opened Prince of Wales Island International School in Penang, Malaysia. In five years, the school was taken to international award recognition and a new primary school conceived and created, while the international schools’ community provided a wealth of experience, as well as travel and networking opportunities across Asia. Returning to their home in Woodhouse in 2020, Simon has enjoyed reconnecting locally. His regard for the foundation goes back a long way, but his interest is in the future.

Robert Saunt

Robert attended the Masterclass programme ran by the Foundation whilst he was at a local state primary school and was immediately struck by the opportunities at LGS. After experiencing the sessions, he knew that this was where he wanted to go to secondary school. But he realised that this was a school where you needed to pay fees to attend, and there was simply not the financial capacity at home to make it possible.

Undeterred, 10-year old Robert arrived home after a Masterclass session and found the assisted place forms, printed them off and set about completing them as far as he could before presenting them to his mother with one request – can we see if it is possible for me to attend LGS? It turned out it was, and Robert obtained a full Bursary. “Attending LGS changed the course of my life. I am incredibly thankful that people have provided such significant donations that have given me the opportunity to benefit from an incredible educational experience.” Robert’s pathway after school was not typical, he was the first pupil to undertake a degree apprenticeship, in his case in Business Management.

Following his apprenticeship, he’s worked for BSI as Senior Business Analyst and become one of the youngest Chartered Managers in the country, the highest level of professional management qualification. Much of Robert’s work has been around large scale, international projects and programmes which have involved organisational change, design, strategy, and target operating models; all driving towards efficiency, growth, and continued success in the businesses he’s worked in.

Whilst working for BSI, Robert is also the CEO of a business he founded in 2021, The Honest Travel Company, a luxury travel agency specialising in both cruise and tailor-made holidays.
