Spotlight on Sport; National Champions, County Winners and Sporting Success

We’re incredibly proud to have witnessed an outstanding number of our sports teams crowned National or County champions this half-term. This outstanding level of sporting success reflects our pupils’ hard work, determination and resilience and we’re delighted to be home to some of the country’s best young athletes.
England Hockey Champions
Loughborough High School’s U18 Junior hockey team made history this half-term by being crowned England Hockey Tier 2 Schools Champions on 11 March following a thrilling final at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, the iconic, purpose-built venue for the London 2012 Olympics.
Loughborough Schools Foundation’s Head of Hockey, Hannah Grieve, was delighted with the result. She said: “I am incredibly proud of this group. They have trained together week in, week out for seven months to achieve this goal and have written their own piece of history for LHS. They deserve every accolade that comes their way, and I hope one day they will look back and reflect on how much they have achieved!”

Double National Badminton Champions
Securing their place as one of the country’s top school badminton teams, Loughborough High School’s Key Stage 3 badminton team won two national competitions in less than one week! On Monday 24 March, the girls triumphed at the National Cup Final, organised by School Sport Magazine, before claiming victory at Badminton England’s National Schools Championships on Saturday 29 March.
Star player Mutiara, Year 7, played a pivotal role in the team’s success, remaining undefeated in singles matches throughout the tournament. Ranked number one in England for both U13 and U14, she showcased her exceptional talent during the competition. “It was an amazing feeling to win two national champions titles and a great experience to play at the national centre alongside my friends – we weren’t expecting to win all five of our games but were so pleased to make it all the way through to the end,” said Mutiara.
Floodlight Friday
Loughborough Grammar School’s 1st XI football team played a superb match against Kimbolton School at our Floodlight Friday game. With a great crowd supporting the home side, it was an exceptional experience for all players involved. We witnessed strong defense, excellent goals and well-calculated penalties – well done all!
County success
From football to swimming, a wide range of Loughborough Grammar School’s teams saw sporting success as they gained the title of ‘county champions’ this half term.
The U15 football team became both National Cup semi-finalists and county cup champions whilst the Key Stage 3 Badminton team finished 7th in the country at the England Badminton National Schools Finals. Both successes were celebrated with a special reception hosted by Head of Loughborough Grammar School, Mr James Neville. The pupils gathered alongside the sports staff to receive formal recognition for their excellent efforts this half-term.
The rugby and swimming champions will also be receiving recognition from the Head at the beginning of next term as both teams also achieved exceptional accolades this season. The Key Stage 3 swimming team won the Leicestershire and Rutland County Swimming Finals whilst both the U16 and U15 rugby teams claimed victory. After a 45-7 win, the U16 rugby team became the county rugby champions as the U15 team followed suit and also claimed the county title after a 28-21 win.
Congratulations to all our pupils for the results of their exceptional teamwork and sporting excellence.
