This week at Loughborough High School…

This week saw International Women’s Day, the Annual East Midlands Association of Classical Teachers Latin and Greek Reading Competition, the Year 7 and 8 Academic Extension Day and the Year 12 Prefect Hustings.

This International Women’s Day, Head Girl Yla and the Marketing Team continued with their Woman of the Week initiative. This week, they celebrated famous alumni Rachel Parris, (LHS 2002). Rachel is a comedian, musician and actress. She has featured on TV shows including: ‘Would I lie to you’, ‘Mock of the week’ and ‘QI’. In 2018, Parris was named Female First’s Comedian of the Year and in 2019 she won the Chortle Award for Best Music and Variety Act. The Development team got in touch with Rachel to tell her that she was LHS’ woman of the week, to which Rachel replied explaining how she was really honoured and felt proud to have been included.

Wednesday saw the annual East Midlands Association of Classics Teachers’ Latin and Greek Reading Competition. Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School participated, as well as competitors from other schools, including Nottingham High, Notts Girls, Warwick, Derby and Leicester Grammar. The judging panel included two former teachers – Hilary Walters (LGS Staff 1984-2015) and Alison Henshaw (LHS Staff 1995-2004), and two former pupils – Jane Ainsworth (LHS 1995) and Lauren Wilson (LHS 2011). Congratulations to our students who took part and won prizes.

Thursday was the Year 7 and Year 8 Academic Extension day! The girls were introduced to this year’s ‘Airbus challenge’ where they were tasked with creating their very own sustainable airline company. They were scored on their response to the challenge, consideration of diversity, and eco-awareness. Well done to all the groups; your pitches were brilliant!

On Friday morning, LHS held its annual hustings! Forty girls gave speeches, all competing for one of the eleven positions available as a Senior Prefect at LHS. The students were asked to submit one vote based on the speeches and were advised to consider who they believe will best represent the student body. Next week, the staff will place their votes based on the written applications. Good luck to everyone competing for a role as a Senior Prefect!
