Last week, to mark National Careers Week and International Women’s Day, we were delighted to welcome Dr Rebecca Grant, Lecturer and Biometrologist, to LHS.

Becky talked to the girls about how she came to study engineering from A levels in Art, Design and Maths, before completing a PhD in regenerative medicine encompassing bio-sciences, bio-engineering, manufacturing technologies and metrology.

Apart from hearing about her research in the field of scientific measurement, the girls were fascinated to hear about the interdisciplinary nature of Becky’s career so far; particularly the value of her creative A levels in an engineering environment, and use of her transferable skills to move in areas traditional requiring a science background.

With a placement year at Bentley Motors, a research placement at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a prestigious IMechE research scholarship, Becky proved a real inspiration to her audience and swept away lots of myths about the nature of engineering.
