Sixth Form Life

The Student Perspective

Hello! We are the LHS Senior Prefect Team and we wanted to give you some insight into life in the Sixth Form and all the fantastic opportunities you can experience here at LHS.

From the large range of A Level subjects, to the sense of community and exciting co-curricular activities, you’ll never find a dull moment! Starting at Sixth Form anywhere is a very different experience and you find yourself becoming much more independent, and at LHS you are encouraged and enabled to pursue any aspirations you may have. There will of course be a slight step up from your GCSE workload, but at LHS you will feel supported and motivated by the community you are a part of. From your subject teachers, form tutors and friends you will always find somebody to turn to and assist you in any way they can.

Aside from your studies, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities which really balance your academic life with your wellbeing and personal hobbies or interests. If anything, we really feel that these activities make LHS Sixth Form a really dynamic environment and the other parts of your school day will only enhance what you learn in the classroom. On Wednesday afternoons, Sixth Formers take part in Health and Wellbeing where you have a chance to be active and get moving. You will also be able to meet other members of the Foundation on Thursday afternoons in the STEP programme which is mixed with Sixth Formers from the Grammar School and Amherst. There are so many activities to choose from so whether you join the Combined Cadet Force, volunteer at a local primary school, broadcast on LSF radio or join LSF Brewery Club, there is no doubt you’ll find something that suits you. We also have a vast array of co-curricular activities which run at lunchtimes and after school and these are a great place to make friends and pursue your own interests. As a Sixth Former you could also lead a club or begin one if there is a certain hobby you are passionate about. You’ll start to see that there’s always so much going on at LHS.

You will also be a part of a House at the High School, and whether it be Burton, Hastings, Storer or Fearon, the sense of friendly competition and fun challenges throughout the year add another exciting dimension to LHS life. You may even choose to put yourself forward for a House prefect role as the year progresses or any of the other amazing prefect positions which make up our Prefect Team. Whilst these positions present a great opportunity to become more responsible and independent, in whatever way you choose to spend you time at the Sixth Form, you will grow into a far more well-rounded and confident individual.

You will begin to feel a real sense of community when you begin to meet new people through the common rooms: you will find that you will talk and build relationships with the majority of your year group. This generates a real sense of community and means that the year group is constantly connected, even when you are not in the same form or in similar lessons. You will find the microwave and kettle essential in keeping sugar and caffeine levels high throughout the term, but make sure you’re one of the first in the queue! The relationships you form in the common room can be transferred to all areas of the school, as long as you keep it tidy!
