A Splash of Fabulous Fundraising

As a Comic Relief ‘Super School’ LHS staff and students did not let the opportunity to support the charity go by without immersing themselves fully into the spirit of the day and have some fun while fundraising! We have continually held a non-uniform day since the creation of ‘Red Nose Day’ and often with a comical theme. This year, our Head of Drama, Sally Boon proposed the idea of having a school ‘Danceathon’, following the lead of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman’s recent event. Rather than do 24 hours of dancing we planned to have staff and students dance throughout the whole school day from 9:00 until 16:00, with the idea that there must always be people dancing in the school hall throughout that time. Our non-uniform theme was dancewear, so many arrived looking suitably bedecked in eighties neon and legwarmers! We started the day with the whole school dancing the Macarena, the Cha Cha Slide and the Conga around the school, followed by seven hours of participants following dance moves to popular hits, projected on the screen. Some managed to carry on doing high impact dancing non-stop throughout the day, which was incredible! During the lunch break, we held a very entertaining staff vs student dance-off, which saw staff busting some very energetic moves such as head spinning and cartwheeling in a bid to outdo the students! All in all, the day was a massive success with many staff and students saying it was so much fun and there were lots of requests to make it an annual event. Throughout the day, the hall was always full of dancers who had all paid 50p to dance for as long as they could – a challenge that far exceeded our expectations! The Danceathon raised £301; this combined with the non-uniform money raised just over £850 for Comic Relief.
