The Strings and Orchestras faculty is a thriving department, equally popular with students young and old. It incorporates bowed string players as well as harpists and electric and classical guitarists.

The faculty enjoys links with the Royal Northern College of Music and has recently benefitted from string days run in conjunction with RNCM students and Head of Strings, Chris Hoyle as well as visits by Professor Ben Holland and Dalcroze expert Bethan Habron-Jones.

2017/18 saw the formation of the LSF Massed String Ensemble. 50 students from the four Schools and from every school year from Year 3 to Year 13 formed a multilevel ensemble that competed in the Music for Youth Regional and National finals and were selected to perform in the Schools Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, London. They then went on to play at the MFY Primary School Proms in Symphony Hall Birmingham. Other national success has seen current and recent students from the faculty gain undergraduate places at RNCM and RAM. Students have also taken up places at RCM, RAM and Birmingham Conservatoire junior schools. Orchestral membership of students includes the National Youth Orchestra, National Children’s Orchestra and the National String Orchestra as well as several of our players holding principle seats in the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra.
