The Clash!

The annual 1st XV fixture between Loughborough Grammar School and Nottingham High School is always a Grammar School boy’s dream and to play the match on a pitch at Loughborough University for a fantastic cause, only made the fixture even more special. Leukemia UK was our chosen charity in honour of our respected teacher Mr. Miles, whose daughter is unfortunately suffering from the condition. With this in the players’ hearts, the fixture meant a whole lot more to everyone on both sides of the pitch.

The fixture was played with passion and vigorous competition, resulting in Nottingham taking and holding a deserved lead and overall win.  The difficult weather conditions meant the Loughborough side could not play their game effectively, though managing to stay in the game until the last play where their scrum on Nottingham’s 5 metre line was painstakingly turned over. This led to Nottingham’s opportunity to clear the ball and secure the win with a result of 13-20.

With the result aside, the main focus of the night was the fundraising. When planning for the fixture started in late June, the boys thought that £250 would be a reasonable goal and an amazing amount of money to donate to Leukemia UK. To have raised over £2,000 before the game had even kicked off was unbelievable and raising £575 on the night via donations, epitomised the unimaginable generosity of the Schools’ combined communities. This generosity cannot be thanked enough by all of those involved in the organising of this event, and we hope that ‘The Clash’ will bring our two communities together again to raise more money for charity.

Over £3,400 has been raised overall which is beyond any of our wildest imaginations, therefore again we reiterate our thanks to the outstanding generosity of all 123 donors and the 400+ spectators who braved the rain to watch the match on Saturday.
