Loughborough Grammar School’s broad Personal Development Programme equips our pupils with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their next steps. The work undertaken both by our Director of Future Pathways and subject specialist staff is central to this strategy and encourages forward-thinking from Year 7 onwards. We also work in partnership with our network of alumni and external organisations to offer tailored opportunities to our more senior pupils that meet their individual needs as they begin to think in more detail about life beyond LGS.

What does ‘Future Pathways’ mean?

We recognise that when pupils are considering their future, they can often mistakenly believe they need to think about what career they want. This logic overlooks a range of vital steps including choosing their GCSE, post-16 and post-18 options. Our Director of Future Pathways, Miss Sarra Jenkins, encourages pupils to think about the future that is right for them by taking all these steps into account. At Loughborough Grammar, therefore, the term ‘Future Pathways’ encompasses everything our boys need to think about ahead of their immediate next step after leaving the School.

What support is available to pupils?

Whilst we aim to support our pupils from the very beginning of their futures thinking, increased support is provided for boys who are at the stage of making successful applications to their chosen path. Guidance and support available for pupils in Years 12 and 13 includes;

  • Understanding the aspirations of each individual pupil and helping them put the steps in place to achieve them
  • Access to the online platform, Unifrog, designed to help pupils make informed decisions about their future career paths and university applications.
  • Trips to exploration events where pupils can see the variety of options available to them and talk to university representatives or industry professionals
  • Visits from employers and universities to our campus
  • Access to the latest industry insights through talks from returning alumni who inspire our boys through their own experiences
  • Extensive support with applications following the UCAS, clinical, international and Oxbridge pathways
  • Mock interview practice sessions with staff members who are knowledgeable of the application and interview process
  • Personal development opportunities relating to transferable skills for the workplace and support with CV writing.

In addition to events, on- and off-site for pupils, we also work closely with parents. Webinars are run on topics such as student finance and post-18 pathways, and weekly newsletters go home detailing events suitable for both parents and pupils.

With the support and counselling expertise from Miss Jenkins and our wonderful LGS staff team, boys from the Grammar School have been accepted on a variety of different programmes: undergraduate degrees in everything from TV and Film Production to Medicine, degree apprenticeships with UBS and the Government Economic Service, overseas applications to the US, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and much more.
