A popular club enjoyed by boys of all ages every lunchtime, Bridge Club encourages pupils to develop logic, problem-solving and teamwork skills. On Saturday 1 March 2025, we once again hosted the National Team Championships and entered three teams from Loughborough Grammar.

Coached by Mr Happer and volunteer old boy, and current England International, Ben Norton, many boys are currently participating in the England U16 coaching squad where we have had much success in interschool fixtures and competitions.

One Year 9 pupil, who regularly attends the club, commented, “I like that it’s on all the time, every day, and that it’s got a nice community; you can come for a social and to practice. You don’t always have to come to play Bridge because it’s about the friends that you make when you’re at the club”.

Saturday’s competition was full of fantastic performances by our pupils who challenged schools such as Eton, Haberdashers, Westminster and St Paul’s. Split into groups based on ‘appropriate ability’, we entered two teams into the top tier and one into the second tier.

Many of our players mentioned that they “enjoy the competitive side” of entering competitions with one pupil noting that “it gives you a lot of opportunity to develop as a player, both inside and outside of School”.

Our C team of Year 9 pupils were entered into the second level event and performed very well, coming fourth in their section. Our B team, also a team of Year 9 boys, were entered into the top tier and in the round robin qualification had notable wins against Westminster, Eton, Haberdashers and our A team! They went on to rank as the sixth team in the country.

Our A team, made up of three students from Year 12 and one from Year 10, were top at the end of the round robin section of the top tier which put them into the final where, unfortunately, they lost to Haberdashers.

For the third year in a row, we have narrowly missed out on being national champions but have once again seen fantastic achievements from all our players.
