Life in Year 6: A Unique Experience

Pupils in Year 6 at Loughborough Grammar School receive the unique opportunity to be part of a Senior School community before entering Year 7. They are gradually introduced to Senior School life before becoming part of the older years which builds firm foundations and familiarity with the Grammar School campus.

Year 6 have their own classroom and play area but are exposed to everything the School offers in Sports, Drama, Art, Science, assemblies, dining, clubs and trips.

Unlike many junior school environments, lessons in Science, Music, Computing and Art are held with subject specialists in purpose-built departments. This allows the boys to get used to moving from room-to-room in between lessons and increases their independence.

We recently asked our current Year 6 pupils about their experience so far and the opportunity to use specialist facilities at this stage in their education was a standout part of their school life. Pupil, Neeam, said, “I like that we get to use a wide range of equipment because we never had a chemistry lab or different buildings to go to for different subjects at Primary school”.

Boys also have access to an extensive range of lunchtime clubs and can attend all the clubs that are open to Year 7 pupils. Popular choices include Warhammer Club, Beekeeping, Badminton Club, Minecraft Club and Basketball.

Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to mix with Year 7 pupils and interact with more senior Loughborough Grammar pupils. Year 6 pupil Austin commented; “I think it’s good because we can learn from them and understand what it’s like at the School so when we go into Year 7, we’ll already be familiar with the School.”

Whilst Toby reflected on his first few weeks at the Grammar School and noted that “they’re all really helpful. During my first week, I got lost nine times out of ten when I was going to a class, and they helped all the time”.

Year 6 pupils soon become at home within our supportive School community and start to feel a strong sense of belonging. It is an exciting environment in which they can discover a School bursting with activity and full of opportunities in every field.
