Junior Maths Team Success

On Monday 1st April (2019) our junior maths team competed against 32 other schools in the regional heat of the ‘Team Maths Challenge’ competition, for schools from Leicestershire and surrounding areas. The competition is run by the UK Maths Trust, and this year’s heat was held at Castle Rock High School. The four boys in our team were Alex and Matthew (both in Year 9) William and Harry (both in Year 8).

The competition demands a mixture of speed and accuracy from students, to be maintained consistently over the course of the day, through several very different rounds of demanding maths problems. Team work is also important, particularly in the cross number and the two high speed relay rounds, with the students working in pairs there.

Our team was determined, energetic and very quick, and hardly made any errors all day long – leading the competition from start to finish. Our winning score was a very pleasing 97%, which put us well ahead of the second placed team, which was from Leicester Grammar School.

This was the fifth consecutive year in which LGS has won the Leicestershire heat, and indeed the seventh time in the last eight years that we have been the winners here. The team has now qualified for this year’s national final, which will be held in central London in June.

In the Autumn term our senior maths team, consisting of Zhiwei , Alex , Eric  and Adithya, had come second in their own heat, of the Senior Team Maths Challenge competition, being narrowly beaten by a team that went on to come an impressive 16th place in the country in the national final.

Congratulations to all of the boys involved.
