Back to Subjects

At Fairfield, we understand the importance of a great start which is why, our curriculum aims to create joy, meaning and inspiration, allowing the children to be confident enough to take part in a range of different activities when they leave school. Through our values based 3 peaks of PE and Sport, we believe that children will not only be more confident movers when they leave, but also more conscientious and aware of their ability to have a positive impact on others.

EYFS

During the early years, physical education lessons are designed to create joy using movement. Through dynamic play, the children will develop the ABC’s (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Strength) of movement. Using a range of equipment, dedicated teaching methods and passionate staff, the children also enjoy developing their throwing, catching, kicking and striking skills. This is vitally important to our department, ensuring that their first experiences of movement are positive, exciting and meaningful.

PRE-PREP

In years 1 and 2, the children continue to develop their fundamental movement skills through dynamic play. Modified games provide excellent opportunities for the children to understand the importance of being a good team player and how this can be helpful to them in the classroom and on the playground. Kindness is emphasised throughout the lessons and children are given lots of time to practice their skills by working with a partner and in a small group.

UPPER PREP

Children will build upon the work done in the pre prep by entering the world of the Fairfield 3 Peaks of Physical Education and Sport. The 3 peaks of Mindset (HEAD), Fundamentals (HANDS) and Character (HEART) are key throughout the curriculum and links to the wonderful growth mindset development performed across all subjects in the school. The 3 peaks create opportunities for children to connect and find meaning in their physical education lessons, inspiring them to be better people and have a positive impact across the school community.

In years 3 and 4, the children are introduced to the Fairfield Physical Education and Sport Values. Humility, Empathy, Adaptability and Togetherness (HEAT) are taught through modified games, dance and gymnastics, athletic activities and swimming. Through these units, the children not only continue to develop their fundamental skills, but they will also understand what it takes to be a great team player, transferring this into the many sports teams that will be offered during games.

In years 5 and 6, the children continue to refine and develop their movement skills, applying them to more advanced activities. The focus of lessons shifts to six key concepts that aim to develop self-awareness and the ability to learn in any situation. Collaboration, Creativity, Resolving Conflict, Self/Peer Analysis, Resilience and Personal Best are taught through athletic activities, a variety of invasion games, modified net games, striking and fielding games, dance, gymnastics and swimming.
