Loughborough Schools Music are the only Music department in the Midlands to have 'All-Steinway School' status; we have world class facilities, including five Steinway grand pianos.

Our commitment to provide high calibre instruments on which to learn, practise and perform has been a result of a growing keyboard department with pupils of all ages and abilities, taught by our seven piano teachers. Angela Brownridge, our Visiting Keyboard Fellow and International Concert Pianist, makes regular visits to share her expertise and experience with our pianists.  We offer classical and jazz piano, as well as organ.

Our chamber music provision is strong and closely tailored to the needs and aptitudes of pupils. We currently run several string quartets, wind quintets and piano trios with pupils from all of the Schools in the Foundation, which are tailored to fit the ability and individual strengths of the pupils. Recent performances have included Schubert’s Trout Quintet, Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in d minor, Carnival of the Animals (Saint-Saëns), Holberg Suite (Grieg) and Mother Goose Suite (Ravel) for piano duet, as well as Mozart‘s Piano and Wind Quintet.

Throughout the year, pianists perform in a variety of concerts, including duet and chamber music concerts.  Our most promising pianists also perform in an annual concert at Steinway Hall, combined with a masterclass with a Steinway artist. Loughborough Piano Competition runs each year in May. This is an open piano competition for aspiring pianists in the East Midlands under the age of 19, with cash prizes and the chance of performing at Steinway Hall.
