House Music

Since the beginning of term, there’s been a murmur of musical excitement in each of our four Fairfield houses! Pupils across Upper Prep have been auditioning to take part in the House Music solos competition – with many different instruments and singing styles represented. In each house, I had the tough choice of selecting finalists, but I think it is safe to say that Romans, Normans, Saxons and Vikings were each represented by fantastic soloists!

Excitement levels ramped up further at the beginning of last week as each house began work on their House Song! This year we chose ‘You’ve got a Friend in Me’ by Randy Newman (popularised in the film Toy Story). Each house had to devise a winning performance, using instruments, costumes, props and dance moves. As a staff body we are also each allocated to a house – and each assembly slot last week was given over to rehearsals. There was much merriment and friendly competition between staff and pupils alike!

On the day of the competition, Year 3 and 4 came to the Pre-Prep Hall to listen to their finalists, followed by Year 5 and 6 for theirs. The soloists were competing for our House Music Cup (now sitting proudly in the White House – on the left in the photo at the top of this page). At the end of the day, we all came together in the Eadon Hall for ‘THE SONG’ competition. (The House Choir Cup complete with our own Woody can be seen on the right).

We are indebted to Mrs Anna Hill (former Director of Music at Grace Dieu, Y7 parent and alumni of LHS) who judged each part of the competition with great skill.  Mrs Hill very much enjoyed her afternoon with us and spoke of ‘that joy of being involved in an event of young musicians performing their socks off!’ She was also impressed with how well-mannered our students are, as well as just how determined they all were to succeed.

Results were very close indeed – each and every performer should feel very proud of themselves – however, there had to be a winner.

The House Music Cup went to Saxons, whilst the House Choir Cup went to Normans!

Well done and congratulations to everyone who took part!
