1956 Olympic Games Assembly

It was 3C’s turn this week to entertain the pupils with the assembly on the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. The Games didn’t exactly go according to plan. They were the first Games to be held in the Southern Hemisphere and due to Australian equine quarantine, which prevented the country from hosting the equine event, they were the second Games to hold an event not in the host city. Melbourne’s problems were compounded by bickering over financing from politicians, and it looked at one stage as if Melbourne would not be ready to host the Games in time. Furthermore, the Games were marred by countries boycotting them. Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the People’s Republic of China all withdrew from the Games for political reasons.

Thankfully for 3C their assembly did go according to plan and the children delivered an informative and interesting assembly with clarity and confidence. Next week it is 2G’s turn, with their assembly on the 1960 Rome Games, a Games where a certain Muhammad Ali first came to people’s attention.
