It was 1C’s turn to give an Olympic themed assembly, with their chosen host city Helsinki. Helsinki were initially awarded the 1940 Games, but these were cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II. It was to be the Games where the most world records were broken, that is until the Beijing Games in 2008. We learnt that this was the first Olympic Games that teams from the USSR and Israel were entered. We also heard the story of Emil Zátopek, who represented Czechoslovakia and won three gold medals, in the 5,000 m, 10,000 m and marathon (which he had never run before). The assembly concluded with the passing over of the Fairfield Olympic Flame to next week’s hosts, 3C.
