Chris Drane (LGS 1976) wins Spring Trophy, held at Stanton
The Loughburians Golf Society met for their Spring Trophy on 23 May, which saw 14 players meet at Stanton on the Wolds Golf Club for an 18 hole round. Among the many regular familiar faces was new attendee John “Johnnie” Johnson (LGS 1979) who was warmly welcomed by all.
Unfortunately, Captain and organiser Dave Barnett (LGS 1977) was suffering from Scarlett Fever so was unable to attend the golf event, but was able to administer the day by phone, email and WhatsApp, which we were very grateful for. Paul Graveling (LGS 1977) stood in for him at the venue, ably assisted by Hatj (LGS 1976).
The team enjoyed a light lunch of sandwiches before the first group teed off at 2.00pm. Considering the recent bad weather and the amount of rainfall in the previous 36 hours, the course was in very good condition, particularly the greens which are renowned for being good at Stanton. The weather was cool yet windy, but the rain stayed away and allowed for an enjoyable round of golf for all competitors.
After the match, the players arrived back at the clubhouse and were greeted by LGS archivist John Weitzel and the recently appointed Director of Development and Alumni Engagement, Stuart Swan, who, being a keen golfer was delighted to be introduced to the alumni players.
The team then enjoyed fish and chip supper followed by fruit pavlova. After the meal, John Weitzel presented the Spring Trophy to winner Chris Drane (LGS 1976) who scored 38 points, second prize to Jonathan Carlisle (LGS 1989) with 35 points and 3rd place to Chris Wreghitt (LGS 1977) with 33 points.
