LHS Sixth Form Common Room

During the summer, the Loughborough High School Sixth Form common room in Chesterton underwent a significant transformation. Thanks to the generosity of our alumnae community, who donated some of the money which made it possible, the top floor of Chesterton has been converted into a bigger space with zones for studying, relaxing and socialising, allowing the two year groups to come together as one sixth form. The project included the redevelopment of the space which was doubled in size and now takes up the whole of the top floor of Chesterton, new paint and with new furniture.

Here’s what it means to the current sixth formers:

“The new 6th Form centre has finally allowed the LHS 6th Form to come together for the first time. Due to covid, our years have been kept apart to prevent infection, so having a combined common room has allowed us to socialise properly for the first time since the pandemic. It has given students like me in Year 12 the opportunity to speak to the year above more easily, and settle in to 6th Form life a lot faster.

We’ve been allowed to make it our own, from posters on the notice board, to a couple of Christmas trees decorated by the students in a 12 vs 13 competition. We have also been given a new football table, which has allowed for some healthy competition at breaks and lunch. Whilst we may have not completely got the hang of using the dishwasher, the kitchen has been a real success. So far, we’ve only evacuated the school once (in the pouring rain), due to a piece of burned waffle in the toaster! There’s a good mixture of leisure and work spaces, with sofas and blankets for socialising and tables for eating and working. This has allowed us to use our study periods as we wish, and has really made the most of the space. The new study room has allowed us to be more productive in our frees, as it has given us a quiet space away from the rest of school life to get our work done.

Whilst we were apprehensive at first about sharing a common room with the year above, I think it has been a real success. It has allowed me to make new friends in Year 13 and has brought the two years together, which I think is really important for 6th Form. This was helped by our recent wellbeing day, which ended with a mass game of Uno in the common room with both Year 12 and Year 13 students. I’ve got no doubt that the common room has given a whole new meaning to 6th Form life and has really made our start to 6th Form a lot more enjoyable.”

"Our students are absolutely thrilled with the refurbishment and expansion of our Sixth Form facilities, which has not only improved their social and study spaces, but has also enabled Year 12 and Year 13 to come together as a cohesive Sixth Form group. We are so grateful to everyone that has helped to make the project a success - it is truly transformational - and we would be delighted to give our alumnae a tour when they next visit LHS."
