Loughburians Golf Society Autumn Meeting at Luffenham Heath Golf Club

Thursday 26 September saw 15 Loughburian Golfers descend on Luffenham Heath Golf Club in the beautiful county of Rutland. It was the first time the Society had played at Luffenham and it didn’t disappoint. The course is probably the best layout in Leicestershire and Rutland, and it was in excellent condition. However, the golf was made somewhat tricky by a 20mph wind, gusting to 30mph at times during the afternoon, but at least it remained dry for the duration of the competition.

It was great to see a couple of our older members, Ken Stevenson (now 84 years young) and Robert Hallam (former Golf Society organiser) as well as a good group of other regulars. It would, however, be great to see some younger (under the age of 55) members along next year, so if you play golf or have ever played, it would be lovely to see you in 2020.

The Autumn Trophy commenced after most of the players had watched England easily deal with the USA in the second group match of the Rugby World Cup. The course then proceeded to easily defeat most of us with the exception of 5 players with scores of 30 points or more. The best of these by far, was a remarkable 38 points from Jon Soars who became the Autumn Trophy winner. Jonathan Carlisle was a creditable second with 34 points and Tom Barton 3rd with 32 points.

The day concluded with an excellent meal of steak and ale pie followed by apple crumble and custard which was well received by the windswept golfers.

The final event of the season is our annual match against Old Nottinghamians at Hollinwell on Tuesday 15 October when the Loughburians team will attempt to wrest the trophy back from the Nottinghamians.
